Fungal Foray in Hob Hey Wood

Autumn is the time of year when Hob Hey Wood fills with fungi of all weird shapes, sizes and colours. The range of different species is impressive.

Going out looking for mushrooms is called a 'fungal foray'. And we did just that over a few days. This picture shows honey fungus.

Firstly a warning. If you do go looking for fungus, look don't touch. There are several species of fungus that are harmful yet look similar to edible species. Take 'destroying angel' and 'death cap'. Their name clearly indicates that eating these can result in death. Only experts should touch or collect fungus.

Whilst I don't know if the two poisonous species mentioned above can be found in Hob Hey Wood, another (less) toxic species is found: fly agaric. Eating this could make you ill.

Many species of fungus can be found on rotting wood, such as this bracket fungus.

This delicate looking mushroon is, I believe, a type of bonnet fungus. You can probably tell that my fungi identification skills need some work!

This weird looking thing is, I think, a coral fungus.

Not sure what this one is.
