Half term: things to do in Hob Hey Wood

It’s half term and the kids need something to do. Well, we have a wonderful, free natural resource to make use of: Hob Hey wood. Getting out in the fresh air has proven health benefits for kids and adults alike so going for a walk is really beneficial.

However, apart from walking, what else is there for kids to do there? Lots of things!

How about a picnic. There’s a picnic table and two benches right by the main bridge. Food always tasted better outdoors, doesn’t it?

Try Pooh sticks. Choose a stick each, let them fall at one side of the bridge. The winner is the person whose stick comes out of the other side of the bridge first (if at all). Here you see us playing a game of Pooh sticks at the top bridge. I didn’t win…

What else? The National Trust has a page on lots of other things to do with sticks, too. Building dens, making trails, damming streams, loads of other things too. Check out the webpage here:

How about bark rubbing, or making a picture out of fallen leaves or nuts etc. I remember doing this as a kid, about 45 years’ ago…

A great online resource is the Woodland Trust website ‘Nature Detectives’ section. Here, for example, they list 192 activities to do in autumn! Building a raft, making bird feeders, wildlife tracking, making masks, leaf identification, building an elf house, spooky scavenger hunt, the list goes on and on...

So hopefully, you can see that there’s loads of things to do over the half-term break. All are free so let’s get out there and try some of them!

If you do try some activities, why not post what you got up onto our Facebook page (click the link below).
