Tree planting in Hob Hey Wood

The 3rd February saw the Hob Hey Wood Friends Group planting trees to extend the new hedge and to add to the community orchard.

Attendance was excellent given the starting temperature of -3C! Planting is quite physical work so we soon warmed up and it was actually a beautiful day!

We focussed on extending the new hedge towards the field boundary and planting some fruit trees next to the existing community orchard.

We were supplied with damson and plum trees, in addition to 'cob nut' trees which produce large, tasty nuts similar (but larger) to hazel nuts.

This was quite exciting work as the trees and their fruit are there for the community to harvest. So, imagine going down to the wood in a year or so, to be presented with a wealth of damsons, apples, plums, and those greengage plums which are green and make excellent jam! Can't wait!

We've not finished with the planting; there's more hedge to do more fruit trees to plant, as well as some berry trees for colour and bird food, as well.

As always, volunteers are warmly welcome. Futures dates are publicised on this website and the Facebook page, so if you want to come along, get some exercise, meet new people, and make a difference for the community and the local wildlife, we'd love to see you!
